Interesting Information

Subject: NEW RESOURCE: Guidance note on Integrating Gender into Internal Police Oversight

v  How can a police service monitor its success in providing equal opportunities for men and women?

v  How can it monitor how it addresses the different security needs of men and women?

v  How can it ensure that attention to gender is embedded in all its internal systems and processes?

This guidance note on Integrating Gender into Internal Police Oversight, developed by DCAF,OSCE/ODIHR  and the OSCE Gender Section is a practical resource for police services, and those who manage and support them. It can help a police service move beyond a policy commitment to integrate gender - by designating responsibilities for gender, by monitoring how gender issues are addressed in human resource management and in police operations, and by strengthening prevention and respond to sexual harassment and discrimination.

Designed as a complement to the DCAF, OSCE/ODIHR, UN-INSTRAW Tool on Police Reform andGender, and DCAF’s Gender Self Assessment Guide, the guidance note contains checklists, examples of good practice from across the OSCE, and a self assessment table.

It is an essential resource for those: working at the strategic or management level in police services, responsible for human resources, providing specialist services for victims of domestic and sexual abuse, and supporting police reform and/or gender mainstreaming.

Please contact DCAF if you would like hard copies. The guidance note on Integrating Gender into Internal Police Oversight will be available also in Bosnian, French and Russian in the coming months.

Associated guidance notes are available on: Integrating a Gender Perspective into Internal Oversight within Armed Forces and Integrating Gender into Oversight of the Security Sector by Ombuds Institutions & National Human Rights Institutions. DCAFOSCE/ODIHR and the OSCE Gender Section  thank the Swiss Agency for Development & Cooperation for supporting the development of these resources. OSCE/ODIHR would also like to thank the United States government for supporting additional printing of the guidance notes.

Please do not hesitate to let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Kind regards,

Checking In with the Latest News

Hi Everyone

It's been awhile since I sent out a blog.  The Regional Report for all Regions is due August 26.  If you have something you would like to contribute to it, or any questions/concerns/salutations for me to bring to the Board, please send them to me by Aurgust 20th so I can include them.  Any affiliate organizations in the region need to send a report to me and or Myra James by August 22, 2014.  Myra's email is myrajames@shaw.ca.  Please let me know if a report is submitted.

I want to take this time to thank all who came to and participated in the Regional Seminar this past March.  It was a great success and we are the envy of the organization.  I am considering putting on another seminar in 2016 (I'm giving myself more time this time) if you have a suggestion or want me to consider your city let me know.

Our sister member - Deputy Sita Singh of Washoe County Sheriff's Dept. has been nominated for the VFW (Veteran of Foreign Wars) National Law Enforcement Public Service Citation.  She has also been nominated to receive a Distinguished Service Medal from Sheriff Haley.  The awards ceremony will be held on Friday, September 5, 2014 in Reno NV.  We are all very proud of her and her accomplishments.

Please be safe out there...

Thank You for your hard work and support of Region 10.
